“The ‘Eight O’Clock’ Musical Club gave the closing soiree of their fourth season on Thursday evening [some?] weeks earlier than usual, owing to the intended departure for Europe of their leader, Signor Abella. This gentleman received a handsome set of diamond studs on the occasion, while a valuable case of jewelry was presented to his wife, the celebrated Mme. D’Angri. This club is very prosperous, having increased in numbers popularity, while it is still distinguished for elegance of style and selection and for the talent of its individual members. The effect of choruses by so large a body of fine and well-trained voices is delightful. The programme consisted on this occasion entirely of Italian music with the exception of ‘Salve Regina,’ by Hauptman, in the ecclesiastical style. The concerted pieces were from ‘Attila,’ ‘Nabuco’ and ‘Lucia’ were [admirable?], of course, and we regret that we are [deterred?] from expressing our opinion of the [?] and beautifully-rendered solos. A club of this kind supplies a want that would otherwise be much felt; for it is here that those who [have?] sung to enraptured audiences show for [awhile?] a touch of their old fire, while here, also, [those for?] whom a brilliant future is predicted, [illegible…flight].”
