“The engagement of Miss Nilsson by Mr. Maurice Strakosch has already been announced in these columns. And now it seems that Miss Patti is to visit the United States simultaneously with the Swedish artist. Rumors of Miss Patti’s intention to dispute the field had indeed been current for some weeks past, but all of them lacked confirmation. Their indorsement [sic] at present, though not very clear on the face, is, nevertheless, pretty satisfactory. It comes in the shape of a telegraphic dispatch from Paris, forwarded last night, and announcing, firstly, that ‘the earnings of Miss Patti for the past season have been one million francs, to say nothing of the presents she has received;’ and secondly, that ‘the Marquis of Caux, Miss Patti’s husband, has just contributed fifteen hundred francs to the funds of the Plebiscitary Committee.’ It is hardly to be supposed that the exact amount of the vocalist’s earnings needs electricity as a means of record, and equally unlikely that the Marquis de Caux’s liberality toward the cause of the French Empire should require as immediate recognition here. Viewing these facts, however, as likely to interest a public before whom Miss Patti is soon to reappear, they are of some moment, and their transmission deserves a welcome from the dilettanti, at all events, as indicative of rare pleasures in store.”
