“…The only chance for fault-finding with the affair lay in the tedious waits between the four serious of tableaux. But, perhaps, country audiences like those Mrs. Jarley was wont to address, did not object to this inexpensive prolongation of the show, although she must have been fully aware that the people she was instructing and amusing were not of the olden time, if only by the very modern melody of ‘Captain Jinks,’ of which an emphatically modern hand-organ in full view and hearing of the spectators, dealt out and repeated and most liberal allowances.”
