Story of the piece, reprinted from the Chicago Times.
“His [Emmet’s] most popular successes last night were in a series of character songs such as are sung at the minstrel halls. Adapted to an English-German patois, they are like familiar friends in an unaccustomed garb, and are certainly very ludicrous indeed. A solo with variations on the mouth harmonicon brought that insignificant little instrument almost within the range of artistic capability, and was warmly applauded by the members of the orchestra as well as by the less critical audience.”
“Mr. Emmet’s songs, dances, drollery, and sentiment have taken the fancy of the people.”
“In the songs and dances, however, he [Emmet] came out strongly, and was deservedly applauded.”
