“In addition to these, lovers of music and seekers after coolness will find no better place in the City to pass the sultry evenings than Theodore Thomas’ pleasant garden at Seventh-avenue and Fifty-ninth-street. It is rare, indeed, that a breeze from Central Park does not lend its refreshing influence to make this one of the coolest spots, and the nightly entertainment offered is always of a high order. Mr. Thomas has brought his orchestra to an unusual degree of excellence, and its performance is always satisfactory and often brilliant. The accessories, too, are carefully looked after. There is a perceptible improvement in the character of the audiences and the facilities for maintaining order; the refreshments are of fair quality, and the waiters trained and prompt. Even if this were not so, the quality of the music might atone for many shortcomings. We know of no more agreeable way of spending a summer evening than over ice or sherbet to listen to the harmonies of the German or Italian masters, as interpreted by what is probably the finest orchestra in the United States.”
