For Coes benefit. Coes has “been stricken with paralysis and [is] unable to attend to his business.”
Announcement that George H. Coes’s face became paralyzed on Monday, May 9, 1870, and he was consequently unable to appear throughout that week.
“George Coes, who met with such an affliction, lately, by having the right side of his face paralyzed, is no better. As a token of appreciation of him as a performer and a gentleman, a matinee benefit has been gotten up for him…Manager Butler has given the free use of the theatre, the orchestra has volunteered, and every member of the company has freely given their services. Mr. Coes is one of the most versatile performers in the business, and is deserving a good benefit.”
