“The grand reception and ball of the Ninth Regiment, N. G. S. N. Y., will come off on the 27th of this month at the Academy of Music, and great preparations are being made to make it a success. The officers and members will appear in full-dress uniform. One hundred and sixty musicians are engaged—sixty musicians for promenade music in the regimental band, under Prof. M. J. O’Brien, the band-master of the regiment, and one hundred under Max Maretzek for dancing music…The reception is given in honor of the anniversary of the departure of the regiment for the seat of war in 1861.”

Review: New-York Times, 28 May 1870, 1.

“…A fine musical programme was executed by Max Maretzek, who wielded his baton over an extensive orchestra, number 150 musicians. One of the pieces performed was a new gallop by the leader, which abounded with fine imitative effects, and proved to be worthy of Mr. Maretzek’s fame as a composer.”

Review: New-York Daily Tribune, 28 May 1870, 5.

“…Maretzek’s Band of 125 pieces and the regimental band were in attendance, and discoursed the usual spirited music to the gay and gallant dancers.”
