“The frequenters of this agreeable resort still continue to be numerous, appreciative, and of the better class. The perfect freedom of the place, while it makes it pleasant and desirable to most people, still keeps many, who object to the odor of tobacco smoke and the clinking of beer glasses, from attending very frequently.

“The acoustic qualities of the garden are well known. It seems hardly possible, yet Thomas’s orchestra gives out more sound, apparently, than the immense orchestra and chorus at the Coliseum. [A reference to the Beethoven Centennial Festival, which occurred this week at the “Coliseum”—the Empire Rink converted to accommodate thousands more people.]

“Last evening the place was well filled to listen to the usual Thursday evening classical selections, together with others of a lighter and more popular character.”
