At the close of the cornerstone laying ceremony, “the Society proceeded to the Terrace Garden…where a Summer night’s festival was held, which was spoiled, however, as far as members are concerned, to some degree, by the thunder-storm which occurred toward evening. The evening entertainment consisted of music performed by Mollenhauer’s Band, several choruses sung by the Beethoven Maennerchor, and dancing. The whole festival was a complete success throughout. The Society intends to have their hall erected in time for the celebration of the centenary of Ludwig von Beethoven, on December 17 next, on which occasion they will perform the opera ‘Fidelio,’ and the oratorio, ‘Christ on the Mount of Olives,’ both by Beethoven.”
