“The music, however, seemed scarcely so good as it used to be, in spite of the several valuable additions recently made to the choir, and the inimitable execution of Morgan. Trinity music, indeed, seems to show an increasing tendency toward those intricate and over florid Anglican compositions which Dr. Dix or Mr. Morgan, or whoever manages the musical business of the church, must know have already been discarded by the acknowledged clerical leaders of taste in England. The anthem, especially, seemed to strike a pair of confessedly unscientific ears as being marred by several clear sins against sound musical principle. Then the responses to the commandments in the communion service are decidedly a change for the worse from the magnificent chant which was used formerly for so long a period. Indeed, the new chant appears to be singularly meaningless and inappropriate.”
