“Last evening the new & illustrious prima donna Miss Nilsson was serenaded in state at Dr. Doremus’ by her Scandinavian compatriots. Was invited. Spent two hours on the premises perspiring as in a steambath. Some 60 or 70 present—mostly unknown to me. Was presented to the fair Christine, a very lovely blond young lady, with an earnest kindly intelligent expression, & a pleasant manner. At eleven the serenades became audible in the distance. Morris Miller & I perceived with alarm that when they were once in position in the Doremuses’ courtyard our escape would be cut off indefinitely, so we effected actively & masterly to retreat through the crowd that choked Fourth Av.—came here & rolled a cigar. Doremus is too much elated with his lioness, Doremus makes himself too conspicuous as showman.”
