“Just from first C. M. A. rehearsal with Ellie. Surprised & delighted to find Trinity Chapel Schoolhouse room crowded. Near 200 in the chorus. Many of our old army & many recruits. Ellie was received with enthusiasm by her friends of last season. Dr. Pech made an allocution, in the course of which he took occasion to pay me sundry compliments & to cover me with “goose flesh.” The chorus applauded very good-naturedly. Mass was Haydn’s No. 3—roughly done of course. But if we can secure good principals, it will be most effective.”
