“The unusually prolonged season of German opera would seem to indicate the possibility of the permanent establishment there of a lyric enterprise which has given evidence of deserved vitality.
“Last night Auber’s ‘Masaniello’ was performed with good effect, Mr. Bernard and Mr. Franosch sustaining the principal parts.”
“This favorite old opera was produced last evening before a crowded house. Everything considered, it was well rendered and elicited the approbation of the assemblage. The choruses, so well known and deservedly popular, were harmoniously given, and the fruits of a good rehearsal were prominent throughout. Masaniello was sustained by Mr. Bernard, Pretred by Mr. Franosch, Alfonso by Mr. Habelman, Fenella by Miss Mary Sand, and the Princess Elvira by Miss Romer. The solos incident in the several rôles were, with very few exceptions, sung with artistic finish, and in some instances were received with loud demonstrations of applause. Aside from scenic discrepancies the opera was well placed upon the stage. Mr. Bernard was particularly good, and the support was altogether highly creditable.”
