“In the second performance of ‘Norma’ at the Stadt Theatre last night, Madame Lichtmay again showed to admirable advantage her wealth of vocal gifts and her marked dramatic power. In the intenser passages of the last act she was particularly fine, and she received in the Adalgisa of Miss Romer and the Pollio of Herr Bernard such thoroughly good support that the audience were carried to the utmost bounds of enthusiasm, and proved their approbation by frequent encore calls before the curtain. The Oroveso of Herr Franosch also won great praise. His acting throughout was careful, dignified and effective, and his rich, powerful voice more than adequate to the demands of the music. The orchestra was, moreover, managed last night with greater skill than usual, though susceptible of still greater delicacy; but altogether, ‘Norma,’ as given at the Stadt Theatre last night, was the best lyrical performance yet heard in New York this season.”
