“Mr. J. H. Goodall gave a concert at Steinway’s small hall on Thursday afternoon, to which members of the press and others were invited. The notice stated that Mr. Goodall was demented on all subjects but that of music. We do not see the necessity of the exception. He played on the piano and the violin indifferently and without proper intelligence or wisdom. We have no faith in the ability of any man to play properly the works of the great composers who is himself bereft of his faculties. The sentiment that Mr. Goodall and his playing inspired was one of immense pity rather than admiration. The facts of the case are sufficient to disarm criticism, and we hope that occasion for it will not arise.”
