“The performance in aid of the funds of the French Benevolent Society of this City took place at the Grand Opera-house on Saturday evening. The theatre was comfortably filled, and the pecuniary results were even larger, we understand, than the cheery appearance of affairs allowed one to suppose. The entertainment consisted of ‘Les Brigands,’ of a farce entitled ‘Les Conférences chez Beaubichon,’ of a violin solo by Mr. PATTI, and the grand air from the third act of ‘Fra Diavolo.’ The exceedingly amusing personations of M. HITTEMANNS in the farce elicited the heartiest, laughter heard during the representation, and gave fresh proof of the worth of a comedian whose portrayal of the cashier in ‘Les Brigands’ has already been noted here for its comic eccentricity. Mr. PATTI executed a series of variations on themes from BELLINI, and on the well-known motive from ‘The Carnival of Venice,’ with precision and brilliancy; he has, however, slight breadth of style, and a tendency to an excessive use of the vibrato, which impairs the effectiveness of that valuable element of a varied method.”
