Delegates at the Astor House & the reception we gave them at Delmonico's, with speech by Judge Murray Hoffman--& the flag raising. . . . my default was wrong, unpatiotic, self-indulgent, but then life is short, & one's opportunities of hearing first-rate specimin's of Beethoven's orchestral work are so few! I was not missed at the collation or the flag-raising. . . ."
