“Although the postponement of ‘Lucrezia Borgia’ disappointed many of the audience at the Stadt Theatre last night, the admirable performance of Auber’s ‘Masaniello’ gave much compensatory satisfaction. Herr Bernard was the hero, and sang with much spirit, securing an encore for his well-known air in the second act, and for the duet with bass which follows it. Herr Franosch was admirable as Pietro. His rich, full voice has not sounded to better advantage any time during the season than it did last night. He was tumultuously applauded, and even rewarded with bouquets after his barcarole in the last act. Mlle. Sand enacted the part of the dumb girl, Fenella, with much grace. Mlle. Krause, the Elvira of the evening, needs much vocal training before she can hope to excel.

Both orchestra and chorus were excellent; and the performance was generally so enjoyable that the genuine lovers of opera will miss a series of real treats if they neglect the Stadt Theatre.”
