"With Dickon [Richard Henry Derby] after dinner to Central Park, & then awhile to Thomas’. Heard an overture 'to Aladdin'—Hornemann (whoever he is) & two movements of Schumann’s B [flat major] symphony. The first (Larghetto) seemed graceful & nice, but it is impossible to enjoy music, or to understand it, while crowds are shuffling about & waiters rushing to & fro with sherry cobblers & zwei lager."
