“The same quotation [“More of the music, less of the words”] might be aptly applied to Thomas’s delightful concerts, which are only not as delightful as they might be by reason of the low hum of conversation which so often plagues the music-lover in the midst of a delicate scherzo of Schumann or Mendelssohn, or a grave adagio of Beethoven. But unless our imagination misleads us, this is getting gradually better—at all events, on the Thursday classical evenings there certainly seems a notable tendency on the part of the audience to drop cobblers, creams and conversation, at least during the better numbers, and listen.”
