“Never before in this city has a season opened so auspiciously as that of Theodore Thomas at this beautiful summer resort. Last night the weather was not only positively chilly, but there were numerous symptoms of rain, which, however, were, happily, not fulfilled, and the audience was both fashionable and appreciative. This is a significant proof of the willingness of the metropolitan public to recognize first class musical talent. Such an orchestra as that of Theodore Thomas cannot be matched either in this country or even in Europe. The audience last night applauded and encored every selection on the programme, and testified their appreciation of the music by attentive silence while each piece was being played. When the weather becomes a little more summery in the evening we expect to find every evening in Central Park Garden crowds of the dilettante of the metropolis. The programme last night was the following [see above]. The magnificent quartet of Verdi was given with as much effect as in the opera, and the overtures were faultless in every sense of the word. On Thursday the programme will be plentifully sprinkled with rare morceaux of classical music. For real, intellectual, thorough enjoyment on a summer’s evening commend us one of those admirable concerts.”
