“The second of the series of Sunday concerts, now occurring at the Grand Opera House, was given last evening. The new band of the Ninth Regiment played with a precision and sentiment it did not attain to on the occasion of a first hearing. The overtures to ‘Masaniello’ and to ‘William Tell’ were rendered with especially good effect. But it seems to us that fresher music would be somewhat more acceptable, and we offer the suggestion in view of intended future concerts. Yesterday’s programme consisted of familiar pieces only, with the exception of a composition by Mr. D. L. Downing, instrumentally illustrative of one of the infrequent incidents of modern travel, in shape of a pleasant journey by rail.”
