“The second appearance of the Laemlein sisters at Steinway Hall last night was a marked improvement over their first performance here. They played with greater ease and effect, and quite justified all the pleasant things that have been said of them by the California press.

Their programme last night included the ‘William Tell’ overture as arranged for Gottschalk as a duet on one piano, and Thalberg’s ‘Norma’ duet, arranged for two pianos. Besides these, Miss Rebecca Laemlein played with charming taste Thalberg’s exquisite arrangement of ‘Sonnambula’ airs, while Miss Emma selected for her solo piece Liszt’s difficult but uninteresting ‘Rigoletto’ fantasia. In all the young pianists were warmly applauded. They certainly, in performing thus in a metropolis where the best pianists of the world have been heard, are obliged to face a competition which can be scarcely surpassed; but despite this they are winning a name and a reputation which further experience and study on their part will enhance.

Mr. Wenzel Kopta last night played with much taste Paganini’s ‘Witch Dance,’ and the polonaise which Vieuxtemp popularized at the Nilsson concerts. He also took part in two quartets for stringed instruments. A young gentleman with a good high baritone was the vocalist; but the lugubrious character of his selections prevented his efforts from gaining appreciation.”

“These clever young pianists gave a concert at Steinway Hall yesterday evening. Their earliest performances were so recently the subject of notice that we need not dwell at present on their repetition. The principal assistance the Misses Laemmlein had, yesterday, was supplied by Mr. Wenzel Kopta, who played Vieuxtemps’ ‘Ballad and Polonaise,’ and Paganini’s ‘Witches’ Dance.’ Mr. Kopta’s tone is not so powerful or so round as we could wish, but he has abundant sensibility, and a control of the finger-board hardly to be excelled.”

“These young Californian pianists have created quite a favorable impression in musical circles, and under proper management we doubt not will achieve the success they look for. The audience, though sparse in number, was very enthusiastic.”
