Announcement: New York Herald, 16 January 1871, 8.

“There is a quiet but nevertheless determined contest going on between the Olympic and Niblo’s. The ‘Black Crook’ drew off a deal of ‘Wee Willie Winkie’s’ friends in the beginning, but crowded houses at the former are becoming less and Fox is getting back all the seceders slowly but surely. Harry Palmer is looking after his reserves, and threatens to advance a battery of new scenery and extra lights on the imperturbable clown, who pursues the even tenor of his way and grins with a chalked face at the tinsel and legs of his competitor. Hayes backs his two transformations against the one in the ‘Crook,’ and swears that he will have ere a month a pack of property hounds on the stage as a foil to Zimmerman’s dog.”
