Review: New York Clipper, 28 January 1871, 342.

The Holland Testimonial matinee benefits at several theatres for the widow and children of the late George Holland, took place on Thursday, Jan. 19th. Although quite a handsome sum was netted, we think the committee who had the affair in charge erred in announcing all the perofrmances upon the same day. The patronage was very unequally distributed on account of very strong attraction being offered at some theatres, while at others very little, if any, novelty was to be found upon the programmes. The largest audience was assembled in Niblo’s Garden. The next best was to be found at Booth’s Theatre, while that at Wallack’s ranked only as third in point of numbers. All the artists carpenters, scene shifters, property men, stage managers, prompters, musicians, treasurers, doorkeepers, ushers and attaches of every grade attached to the various theatres gave their services gratuitously.” Goes on to outline some of the performances; a few mentions of various songs performed at different theaters.
