Review: New-York Daily Tribune, 14 September 1871, 5.

“Mr. Birch announces that people are buying ladders, with which to mount the walls of the San Francisco Minstrel Hall, and so peep in at the windows. The readier and more satisfying method—of securing good seats within, and imbibing the minstrelsy at ease—should be commended to the notice of an eager public. Meantime its enthusiasm can be easily understood—for that is, literally, a banquet of fun over which the Sable Hippopotamus presides, and windows full of heads are not [illegible] accessories to such a feast. The strong points of the San Francisco Minstrel entertainment, this season, are its dancing quartette, its corps of sentimental and comic vocalists, its capital comedians, and its excellent orchestra. These, swayed by the silver wand of the Noble Turtle, constitute the nucleus of as bright an entertainment as could be wished.”
