“Our up-town readers, on whom minstrelsy has not lost its influence, will find no merrier or more clever representatives of that branch of public entertainments than among Messrs. Newcomb & Arlington’s company. The new opera house is bright and comfortable, the programme as comprehensive and as varied as an art which, to be candid, is in its decline, can supply, and the performers are numerous and skilled. The preface of songs, the after-chapters of comic acts and dances, and the epilogue of burlesque can nowhere be read with more cheery surroundings.”

“These sable gentry held forth Monday evening in all their glory at their establishment on Broadway, and attracted a large audience, who seemed to appreciate the combined efforts of the troupe. The programme was very ridiculous, yet exceedingly entertaining, and from the moment the curtain rose until it fell for the last time the risibilities of the audience were greatly aroused. The ‘Black Carnival,’ as the second portion of the fun was designated, consisted of the usual selections, and appeared to afford an immense amount of delight to those present. There was nothing, however, very original in the performance, although many of the artists individually evidenced much humor and ability.”
