“I’m just from Niblo’s with Ellie & Jem [Ruggles]. We saw ‘Kit,’ a most melodramatic melodrama, the principal character wherein (a generous good-hearted reckless rough Southwesterner) is played by Chanfrau, who made a memorable hit twenty-five years ago as ‘Mose,’ the rowdy fireman & b’hoy of the Bowery. This part has been studied with equal care, & the result is a photograph of the fire-eater ‘high-toned gentleman’ who would be an utter ruffian but for his affections & good impulses. The piece is got up regardless of expense, & many of its scenes are most elaborate in machinery & appointments…”
