“C. M. A. rehearsal this afternoon was delightful. All the programme was travelled through. House was full—audience silent and interested. Execution of the work very satisfying. I see now what Beethoven meant by the Katy-did ‘Miserere’ in his ‘Dona.’ He wanted to express a trembling, shuddering deprecation of the wrath to come—a prostrate dread & horror that can barely articulate the ‘Miserere,’ & can give it no musical character. Of course this phrase expresses with equal truth the emotions of passage when nearly frightened to death by the storm at sea, and I doubt whether it be a happy invention in Ecclesiastical music.”
