“Seldom, even in this church, famed for the perfection of its choir, has a mass been sung so well as that of yesterday. The choir, composed of leading artists, seemed as if under some strong impetus to render its inspiring influence to the worship, and the result was a grand concert of sacred melody. The choir is a double quartet, under the leadership of the organist, Mr. H. B. Danforth, and consists of the following named artists:- -First soprano, Miss Emma Howson; second soprano, Miss Heerwagen; first contralto, Miss Benziger; second contralto, Miss Bohmann; first tenor, Carl Bernhard; second tenor, Mr. Weineerts; first bass, Signor Coletti; second bass, Mr. Fleck. Miss Howson is the soprano of the Riching’s English opera; Mr. Bernhard a leading tenor of the German opera, and Signor Coletti the bass of the Italian opera. Miss Benziger, besides being an excellent singer, is also an accomplished violinist. The mass sung was Nini’s, and with such artists as those named above it is unnecessary to say that the rendering of all the parts was superb. Signor Coletti sang the ‘Veni Creator’ before the sermon in fine style. Miss Howson’s solos in ‘Credo’ and ‘Gloria’ were most brilliantly executed. The offertory piece was Rossini’s ‘Tell,’ played by Mr. Danforth with his usual skill.”
