“Another packed house, glittering over with beauty and fashion, greeted Mlle. Nilsson’s second appearance as the Dame aux Camelias, in Verdi’s delightful opera. We have spoken at length before of this matchless interpretation of a difficult rôle, and need only add here that last evening Nilsson was greater than ever, the traces of cold and hoarseness which our fickle climate had left in her voice having now nearly all disappeared. Alfred is the best rôle of M. Capoul, and he appears in it to greater advantage than as Faust, Lionel or Almaviva. We do not, however, approve of substituting in the second act for De Miei Bollenti Spiritu the romance from Halevy’s ‘L’éclair.’ It is, to say the least, inappropriate. The part of Germont, pere, was satisfactorily rendered by M. Barré.”
