“Last night a very elegant and appreciative audience, composed largely of professional and amateur musicians, assembled at the piano-forte ware-rooms of the Messrs. Chambers, Fourth avenue, to listen to a programme of vocal and instrumental music interpreted by some professionals and amateurs of this city. After the overture of ‘William Tell,’ ‘I would that my Love,’ by Mendelssohn, was well sung by Mr. F. L. Merriam and Mrs. M. Vinnie Bishop, as was ‘O, mio Fernando,’ Donizetti, by Miss Louise Finch, a rising young alto who was heartily encored. The gem of the evening, however, was Mendelssohn’s ‘Andante and Rondo Capriccio’ for the piano-forte, played by Master Max Brownold. This composition was handled most admirably; and when it is remembered that the lad who played it is but fifteen years of age and that he rendered it throughout with judgment and delicacy, we may hope for great things from him when he has arrived at maturity. Mr. Bartlett sang a lovely romanza from Donizetti’s ‘Maria di Rudenz.’ Mr. Albert Lawrence, who expected to participate, was prevented from singing by a cold. We understand that the concert of last night is but the first of a similar series.”
