Benefit for the Howard Mission

“A very excellent soirée was given at the American Conservatory hall by the pupils and professors of that institute last week for the benefit of Howard Mission. The soirée was well attended, and a selected programme of choice classical works, such as of Beethoven, Liszt, Rossini, Mendelssohn and Flotow was discoursed in a most excellent manner. One of the pupils, Miss Huyler, sang Arditi’s Valse l’Estasi superbly, and the rendering would have done credit to a professional singer. The young lady has a very beautiful soprano voice and possesses that rare ability to give the proper light and shade and her enunciation is so distinct that every word she sings can be understood. She reflects great credit upon her teacher, Professor Henry Schroeder. Among other pupils that deserve particular mention is Miss Chapman, who has a fine contralto voice and sings with a great deal of expression; Miss G. Haas who sung an aria from the ‘Barbiere’ very creditably; Miss Miller, a very young and promising pianist; Messrs. Wallace and Crosby and Masters Jarvis, Greenfield and Hermanson. The instruction has become very popular under Mr. Schroeder’s direction and deserves every encouragement.”
