“[A]n audience of ladies and gentlemen, larger in numbers, and more enthusiastic in spirit than was probably ever before gathered within the walls of the Academy. The theatre was literally crammed from pit to dome long before the proceedings were opened, and in the course of the evening, thousands were compelled to go away unable to gain admission. . . . The meeting closed at 11 ½ o’clock with a patriotic song by the Union Glee Club.”
