Review: New-York Times, 20 August 1872, 5.

“Mr. Charles White has opened the Athenaeum, at No. 525 Broadway, with a company of fifty first-class artists. The entertainment they supply comprises instrumental and vocal music, comic sketches, ‘stump’ orations, gymnastics, and selections from opera bouffe, and all the performances are good specimens of their kind. The house has been rearranged and redecorated, the auditorium is well lighted, the seats are roomy and comfortable, and the scenery and dresses are quite new.”
