“The audience at the Central Park Garden on Thursday was quite too large for comfort, but the visitors generally stayed til the end of the performance. If the establishment could be enlarged to twice its present dimensions, we have no doubt it would be filled. The novelty on Mr. Thomas’s programme on Thursday was a ‘Festival Overture,’ by Dr. Leopold Damrosch, a work of marked character and scholarship in the modern school, to which the orchestra gave a splendid interpretation. Of the other pieces an arrangement of the Bach-Gounod ‘Ave Maria,’ with violins, basses, harps, and reeds, seemed to be the most popular. The overtures to [see above] were also played, with some lighter pieces. The performance of ‘Les Preludes’ was superb.”
