“To Trinity Church at 10 ½ for Ascension Day service at 11. Kept our pew for Ellie & Jem [Ruggles], etc. & then went & sat in one of the vestry pews, where were some half dozen of that august body church crammed…Music (orchestral) from Gounod’s Mass—introit by Barnby—offertory from the Creation. Decidedly the best orchestral service we have yet enjoyed at Trinity. Even the critical & accurate Mrs. Ellie declared that orchestra & choir did not fail, for a single measure, to keep perfectly together. ‘Sanctus’ of that Mass is most lovely. Rev. Cooke was tenor solo. Remmertz was effective as basso. Miss Madeline Routh sat with Ellie, & was so enthusiastic about the service, afterwards, that I have fallen in love with the young lady, who seems a most warm-hearted genuine little personage.”
