Announcement: New York Clipper, 18 May 1872, 54.

“It is to be regretted that the Grand Opera House benefit in aid of the sufferers by the burning of Niblo’s Theatre did not prove successful. Benefits for ‘sufferers’ are too hastily arranged, in most instances, and frequently managed by gentlemen who have not the necessary judgment, owing to not being performers, and much is said and done by them to the exclusion of the advice and services of those actors whose names and influence would ensure the success which should be the only aim of all interested.”

Review: New York Clipper, 18 May 1872, 54.

“The attendance at the matinee was quite meagre and at night only fair. This was owing probably to lack of management and to undue haste in giving the benefit performances.”
