"An immense business was done during the past week by Sam Sharpley’s Minstrels at 585 Broadway. Nearly every night every seat in the auditorium was occupied and there were many persons standing in the side aisles. The first part has been made unusually attractive. Sam Sharpley and Nelse Seymour, the end men, are the only ones who appear in black faces. Nearly all the songs were changed from the previous week and the jokes and gags were entirely fresh. We have never seen Nelse Seymour appear to better advantage than during his present engagement. He is lively, vivacious and delivers his witticisms with a gusto that enhances their value. Sam Sharpley must be ranked among the best end men in the profession, and we never heard a stale jest fall from his lips. Delehanty and Hengler were the fresh additions to the company, making their appearance on May 27. Their songs and dances met with favor. Harry Macarthy continued his character songs. Charles White and Nelse Seymour made things lively in a couple of sketches, and Sam Sharpley’s songs, with banjo accompaniment, were rapturously applaused. Messrs. Dempster, Rudolph, Fredericks and Henry deserve commendation for their excellent singing in the first part.”
