“Dick [Richard Henry Derby] dined here. Ellie, Lucy & I called for Miss Maud Howe with him, & we proceeded to Wallack’s. Sothern’s ‘Brother Sam’ was intensely funny. It is a companion piece to his renowned Lord Dundreary. It was Dick’s treat, & he gave us all a nice little supper at the Maison D’Orée—not the old place, but corner of 14th St. & Broadway. It was extremely pleasant.”
