“The ‘Jubilee Singers’ (colored) of Fisk University gave a concert at Steinway Hall, last evening. The affair was very largely attended, and its incidents afforded so much pleasure that the tidings that a similar entertainment will occur at the same place on Feb. 14 are not at all surprising. The performances of the ‘Jubilee Singers’ are interesting, because characteristic. Better voices have been listened to in concerts supplied by associations such as the Vocal Society of the City of New-York; and the glees, madrigals, and part-songs generally, interpreted by these organizations, have been far more elaborate and finished specimens of harmony than the tunes of the colored artists. The originality of the melodies and of the words, however, are the principal sources from which the audiences of the ‘Jubilee Singers’ derive satisfaction, and almost every effort, yesterday, secured a demand for its repetition. The programme of the night included sixteen numbers.”
