“’Amateur Philharmonic’ rehearsal 3 p.m. at ‘Robinson Hall.’ Heard someone in the audience call it the ‘Amatory Philharmonic.’ (If that were their true style, I suppose they would hasten to bring out the Sinfonia Erotica.) Room pretty well filled. Heard Haydn’s beautiful symphony ‘no. 2 (?)’ & then came away. Haydn’s works are a storehouse of original lovely thoughts. As they have long been comparatively neglected, people steal from them with impunity, & I wish the Wagners, Raffs, Rubinsteins & Liszts stole more freely.”
