“Christmas, [Trinity Church]: Johny & Temple were with the orchestra. Church crowded. Orchestra good—& chorus good—soli weak—instruments & voices so far apart that it is wonderful the music goes at all. The Hummel Mass far too elaborate & difficult. Performance as a whole crude & tentative.”
[Trinity Church] music committee at 4. We talked over things in general. I am informally authorized to tell Messiter that he must give us no more works so heavy & elaborate as Hummel’s Mass no. 2, which is beyond the capacity of choir & orchestra, especially when separated by so wide a distance, & that he must, for the present, at least, confine himself to the melodic & comparatively early church music of Haydn & Mozart, which is understood by everyone. I am also to consult [Richard] Upjohn about a temporary gallery for the orchestra in the north aisle, near the chancel.
