     Mathewson was “in command of the Thirty-sixth New-York Volunteers [and] fell whilst bravely leading the regiment into action at the battle of Crampton Gap, in Maryland. . . .

     At about twenty minutes after 3 o’clock the funeral procession left the City Hall. First came the Seventy-first Militia Regiment, with arms reversed, and preceded by Dodworth’s Band, which played appropriate music. . . .”
