“A concert of amateurs, tendered to Signor Giuseppe Rizzo by his pupils, took place at the Union League Theatre on Tuesday evening. As a rule, the excellence of amateur performances is to be sought in intentions, rather than in accomplishments; but the entertainment we refer to is to be cited as an exception. Signor Rizzo had, Tuesday, the co-operation of Mr. Harry Stanfield, who, in addition to a tenor voice of excellent quality, has an art education which many professional singers might envy him, and also a spark of the feu sacré, rarer than a proficiency within the grasp of most persons; that of Mr. L. G. Gottschalk, a young baritone, who seems likely to do credit to the name he bears; that of Mme. Bellini, a young soprano with a powerful voice and considerable skill as a songstress; that of Mrs. Florence-Rice Knox, a very winning contralto, and that of Mr. Sackett. Several solos were recited by these performers, a pretty romanza by Signor Rizzo, and a merry canzone by the same composer, being conspicuous numbers of the bill; and the scene and quintet from ‘Il Ballo,’ and the quartet from ‘Rigoletto’—twin masterpieces—were rendered with a correctness, and an effectiveness rarely attained to.”
