“At Lyric Hall last night there was a very pleasing concert, in which ballads, madrigals and operatic selections agreeably alternated. Madame Varian, Mr. S. B. Mills, and other well-known artists participated, the lady appearing to eminent advantage and singing with charming skill, while the pianist won the applause which always follows his efforts. The interest of the evening, however, centered in the debut of Miss Nina Varian, a young lady hitherto known as an actress, but now anxious to study for the lyric stage, and desirous of enjoying the advantages of a musical education in Italy. Miss Varian has an excellent voice and good natural taste. She is yet only a beginner, but one with every promise of marked success. There is, indeed, in this young artist, the material for a prima donna who may add lustre to the history of American music.”
