“The musicians of this city held a meeting on the 26th ult., for the purpose of forming a ‘Protective Association,’ under which title the Society will be known.  No member will be allowed to accept of a situation with any leader not belonging to the Union, and the constitution promises relief to all members who may be out of employment in consequence of adhering to the Society’s rules and regulations.  The following is the scale of prices fixed, governing all members: Operatic performance—First performance, $15 per head; every subsequent performance, $3 in the city and $5 in Brooklyn.  Salaries in the Broadway Theatres, including Barnum’s Museum, $12 per week; in Bowery theatres and concert saloons $10, but if engaged on Sundays or afternoons, $15 per week.  Wedding parties, supper parties, political meetings with procession, $5 each; balls at the Academy of Music, Irving Hall, City Assembly Rooms, or Niblo’s $5,50 each; balls in other places, $4,50 each.  No ball to exceed eight hours.  Serenades of one hour’s duration, $3; every subsequent hour, $1 extra; society or political meetings without procession $4; regimental parades $5 each; regimental funerals, $5 if to the cemetery, and $4 if to the ferry; small funerals one dollar less.  The leaders to have four per cent from these salaries, outside of their regular pay.  The following officers were elected for the ensuing six months:—Henry D. Beisenherz, leader of orchestra New Bowery Theatre, President; Geo. Matzka, Academy of Music, Vice President; David Schaadt, Old Bowery Theatre, Secretary; J.G. Schneider, of Grafulla’s Band, Treasurer; Messrs. F. Reitzel, George Wallace, and T.H. Stoebe, Trustees; Edward Boehm, Fritz Wannemacher, D.L. Downing, E. Schremser, Ad. Heischman, Dan. Wiegand, and Auton Straub, Executive Committee.”
