“C. M. A. rehearsal 3 p.m. Most satisfactory. [Edward Askew] Sothern [the actor] brought thither by Ellie, was enthusiastic. It’s a charming programme, & well rendered.”

Review: New-York Daily Tribune, 07 May 1873, 5.

“The last rehearsal for the closing concert of the Church Music Association took place, under the direction of Mr. Horsley yesterday. The chorus benches were well filled, and the execution of the vocal music was generally creditable, encouraging us to hope from the Church Music Association much better work, after one or two more seasons, than any choral organization has given in New-York for a long time. The programme yesterday included Haydn’s delightful Symphony in C minor (No. 9 of the series composed for Salomon in London), pretty well played by an orchestra of about 43 [line missing?] pieces: Weber’s Mass in G; and Mendelssohn’s ‘Walpurgis Night.’ The announcement that the Mass is now presented for the first time to a New-York audience is not strictly correct. It may never have been sung here before at a concert, but it is frequently given in the Catholic churches.”
