“The programmes at the Central Park Garden have been highly interesting this week, and novelties have abounded. On Wednesday evening seven of the pieces were new. There were two new dances by Strauss, one of them not yet published; a selection from Gounod’s ‘Mireille,’ a march by Hauschild, and a beautiful Nocturne by Julius Zellner. The Dance of Nymphs and Reapers, from Arthur Sullivan’s ‘Tempest’ music, was played again, and promises to become popular. Glinka’s ‘Kamarinskaya,’ one of the best specimens of Russian music; Goldmark’s ‘Sakuntala’ overture; and Beethoven’s First Leonora overture, were among the more familiar selections. One of the most remarkable performances of the evening was Liszt’s familiar second Hungarian Rhapsody, effectively arranged for full orchestra by Karl Müller, and most magnificently played.”
