“…George S. Knight, whose performance at this house some weeks ago convinced us that he was entitled to a front rank among Dutch comiques, was almost entirely incapacitated from performing in consequence of suffering from severe hoarseness. He came before the audience, and, after apologetically referring to the state of his health, attempted to sing a song. The audience, sympathizing with his condition, did not redemand. He attempted a recitation, which, although the effect was somewhat marred, elicited hearty laughter and applause…Pendy sang about Isabella, in imitation of an English comic singer. T. Granger evinced the possession of sterling ability in an India-rubber song-and-dance, during which he introduced imitations of an Irish-reel dancer. A prominent feature of the entertainments were the serio-comic songs of Jennie Engel, and her charming toilet of white satin attracted much attention. As a novelty, the Freeman Sisters sang in character a new version of ‘The Whistling Thief,’ arranged as a duet, which created a favorable impression. Tony Pastor, by the dash, spirit and earnestness which he infused into his comic songs, roused the enthusiasm of the audience to a high degree, which was only allayed after his fifth or sixth reappearance. A new verse, alluding to the Cuban imbroglio, was added to the song of ‘The Flags of All Nations’…A good business has been done, and the Tuesday matinees have become so popular that on those occasions the capacity of the auditorium, both seating and standing, is severely tested.”
